What a filter change actually does in a Houston attic system

Most homes here put the air handler in the attic and the filter at the ceiling return grille, not at the equipment. That grille is usually one or two oversized central hallway returns. The return box above it is often the leakiest part of the system. Return-side leakage pulling 135°F attic air is the recurring efficiency problem, and it loads a new filter with attic dust and insulation fiber within weeks.

Fit matters more than brand. A one-inch filter rattling in a loose frame lets air slide past the edges. Look for gray streaking on the ceiling paint around the grille. That is bypass, not a worn-out filter. Check that the airflow arrow points toward the duct, not the room.

Thicker media is not automatically better. With sagging, kinked flex and undersized return area, a dense filter starves the far bedrooms first. A filter bowed inward and whistling means the system cannot pull through it.

A fresh filter will not clear a musty odor at startup. That odor usually comes from mold growth on the evaporator coil and inside the return box, driven by humidity. Coil cleaning and drain line clearing belong in the same visit. So does sealing the boot and plenum joints.
